Our Wild Neighbors! Who Were They?
I was going to write a long blog post about the wild neighbors we had during our stay on F.E Warren AFB like Woody the Woodpecker, who would grace us with his noisy presence every evening unless the weather was bad. The Chippendales, a horde of begging chipmunks and their friend, Fatso, the prairie dog, who got nice and plump from all the pistachio nuts my husband kept throwing them (yes, I know we shouldn’t be feeding the wildlife, but they were very persistent with their begging. One even started to knock on our camper door in the mornings!). The not-so-shy family of beavers who loved to do drive-by swims across the creek by our camper. And the more-than-a-little-peeved coyotes that would howl at the PA system’s playing of Taps every night at 10 (this humorous ritual will be added to my book). But life happened, so I decided to post a few cute pictures instead, then tackle a subject I’m sure we all struggle with: Conquering Our Phobias (because, frankly, that is what I had to do recently) in my next two blog posts.
So, I apologize in advance for the larger-than-normal quantity of posts this week. And for showing only a fraction of the woodland creatures that made our stay here so special.
Enjoy the pictures!
A rare moment when Woody was not in a tree making noise.
The Chippendales. At one point there was at least six of them.
Along with Fatso.
And you can’t get any cuter than a baby beaver.
Wait, it’s Mamma Beaver. This picture does not do her size justice.
And last but not least in beaverville, Papa Beaver. Who was even bigger than Mamma, and not quite as friendly. He would charge my husband and I when we got too close to his family, which was often. Yes, we where insane. And yes, I know what they can do to huge trees with their teeth, which means our legs where in constant danger, but it was so worth it!
But where are the howling coyotes, you ask?
Well, we couldn’t get any pictures of them. Although, we did try.
What? We couldn’t waste all of our insanity on the beavers. 😉
Thanks for reading! This journey wouldn’t be as fun without you.
Lisa
