What kind of neighbors do you have when this is your backyard?
Well, so far we’ve had a wonderful couple invite us over for a picnic table dinner. An entire Softball Team. (I’m not exaggerating here.) A retired Naval Officer and his wife. (There’s a lot of retirees in this lifestyle.) A full-timing dog rescuer with 6 dogs between her and her boyfriend. And a family of six (I counted their two furry children) who like to deck their camper out in colorful lights. And this has just been next door. This list doesn’t even come close to describing all the intriguing, friendly, and helpful people we have been interacting with, nor the wild neighbors I will be writing about in my next post.
Where can we possibly be to meet this many unusual characters?
Right in the middle of F.E. Warren AFB! Yes, we are still in Cheyenne. And yes, there is an RV park hidden away on the Base I’ve been a part of for the last 20+ years. Who knew? I didn’t. But then again, this is the first time I have ever lived on a Military Base. And this Base just happens to be the backdrop for my first book. Life can be funny that way. Although, there are a few additions and changes I’m going to make before publication now that I know what it’s really like to be trapped on this Base. Okay, maybe I’m not trapped, but it’s a reference that will make sense after you read my book, which I’m hoping you all will. (How did you like that shameless plug?!)
Anyway, we have to wait for the teenage boy to get home from his Senior Trip, so we’ll be here until July 9th. I’m excited to see what kind of neighbors we get in the meantime.
I can’t even begin to explain how different this way of living is, and how different the people who live this lifestyle act. It’s like no one is a stranger. We all have something we love to do in common and that commonality creates an instant bond. Very similar to the one we have experienced as military members, and when on the back of my husband’s motorcycle, but at a level I have personally never experienced before.
I feel this level of openness may be due to the lack of worry. Worry about saying something wrong. Doing something wrong. Wearing something wrong. You name it. Okay, maybe it’s just me who feels this freedom, but I think I’m on to something. But regardless, I’m loving this new way of neighboring (don’t get me wrong, I had wonderful neighbors before) and I have no doubt you all would, too. So if you ever get a chance to do this, even if it’s just for a vacation or part-time, I suggest you give it a try. Who knows, you might decide to join us.
Thanks for reading! You guys rock.
Lisa
